Is your HVAC refrigerant about to be outlawed?
January 1, 2020, the refrigerant R22 will become illegal and systems that use it will become obsolete. In order to repair or maintain systems that requires R22, the only options for technicians will be to use reclaimed and previously produced R22 refrigerant, but those products won't be around forever.
What does this mean for you?
Your unit that currently requires R22 will not be illegal for you to use. It is only illegal to produce more of it; therefore, when your system fails you are in a tough spot. You may be able to convert it to a different type of refrigerant; however, his is costly and may only buy you a few years.
What can you do?
First and foremost, do not purchase a system that requires R22 refrigerant, no matter how good of a deal! Some HVAC companies will try to clear out their inventory, but now you know better. The most cost-efficient solution is to prepare to purchase a new one before the product is no longer available.
